How this calculator works
Your bank balance is not spendable money — most of it is already promised to something. This calculator subtracts upcoming bills and any savings you want to protect from your current balance, then spreads what remains across the days until you are paid again.
The result is a single daily figure you can check before a purchase, which is far more useful than a balance that includes next week's rent.
The formula
Safe to spend per day = (Available balance − Upcoming bills − Protected savings) ÷ Days until payday.
Worked example
A balance of 9,300 with 4,200 of bills still to go off and 1,000 protected for savings leaves 4,100 spendable. With 16 days until payday, that is about 256 a day.
Why this calculation is useful
It prevents the most common cash-flow failure: spending money that was already committed. Checking one number takes seconds and gives you a warning while there is still time to adjust.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting the full bank balance as spendable.
- Leaving out debit orders scheduled before payday.
- Not protecting savings, so they quietly become spending money.
- Using the wrong payday and stretching the money too thin or too far.
- Recalculating only when the balance already looks low.
