Editorial Policy

How our content is produced, reviewed and kept current — and what we will never do.

Last updated: 2026-09-04

Our standards

  • Plain language first: if a term needs jargon, we explain it in the same paragraph.
  • Every concept is illustrated with a realistic worked example using specific numbers.
  • We describe trade-offs honestly, including where a common approach does not work well.
  • We never present general education as personal advice.

How an article is produced

  1. We identify a genuine question people ask about budgeting, saving, debt or loans.
  2. We outline the practical steps a reader can actually take.
  3. We write the draft, including at least one worked example with real arithmetic.
  4. A second reviewer checks the calculations, the clarity and the FAQ answers.
  5. We add internal links to the relevant calculators and related guides.

Reviewing and updating

Each article carries a last-updated date. We review content periodically and whenever a reader reports an inaccuracy. Where a correction changes the meaning of a piece, we update the date and fix it promptly rather than quietly editing.

Independence from advertising

Advertising may appear on Budgeter to cover running costs. Advertisers have no input into what we write, and we do not accept payment for coverage, links or favourable mentions. We do not recommend specific lenders or financial products.

Corrections

If you find an error, please tell us via the contact page. We would rather fix something quickly than defend it.

Calculators

Each calculator page documents its formula and assumptions so results can be checked independently. Our testing process explains how we verify them.
