Savings Goal Calculator
Work out exactly how much to put away each month, week or day to reach a savings goal by a specific date.
Leave at 0 if your savings do not earn interest.
What you need to save
- Amount still needed
- R 25 000
- Time until target date
- 365 days
- Monthly saving required
- R 2 084,93
- Weekly saving required
- R 481,14
- Daily saving required
- R 68,55
How this calculator works
The calculator subtracts what you have already saved from your target, then divides the remaining amount across the time left until your date. It converts that into monthly, weekly and daily contributions so you can choose the rhythm that matches how you are paid.
If you add an interest rate, the required contribution falls slightly because your balance grows on its own. Over short periods the effect is small; over several years it becomes significant.
The formula
Monthly contribution = (Goal amount − Current savings) ÷ Months remaining.
Worked example
A 40,000 goal with 6,500 already saved and 14 months to go leaves 33,500 to find — about 2,393 a month, or roughly 552 a week. If that is more than your surplus, extending the date by four months brings it down to around 1,861.
Why this calculation is useful
It turns an intention into a testable number. Either the required contribution fits your budget or it does not, and knowing that on day one is far better than discovering it in month five.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Setting a target date without checking the contribution against your actual surplus.
- Forgetting costs already inside the goal period that will compete for the same money.
- Keeping goal money in your everyday account where it gets absorbed.
- Running four goals at once so none of them visibly progresses.
- Assuming an optimistic interest rate on short-term savings.
